1. Seychelles

The island nation of Seychelles is as close as you can get to heaven on earth. Perfect for a romantic retreat, there are several islands to choose from - you can hike through lush forests, visit the colourful Hindu Temple in Victoria and feast on fresh fish and lobster under Mahe’s banyan trees. A short ferry hop away, you'll find the island of Praslin where you can stroll hand in hand along Anse Lazio, where the bright blue ocean gently meets the huge boulders that line the shore. 

Get off-grid on the car-free paradise of La Digue, cycling around the island in search of deserted beaches or snorkel with manta rays while living like a castaway in some of the outer atolls like Cosmoledo and Astove.

2. Tanzania

There’s nothing like an African safari if you’re looking for a romantic holiday and Tanzania is one of our favourite places to visit. Spend your days looking for wildlife in the long grasses of the Serengeti or spotting birdlife in the Ngorongoro Crater, before sipping on a sundowner as the sky turns from blue to pink to scarlet. Looking for cheetahs surveying the landscape from the top of a rock, leopards lazing in trees after a night of hunting and lilac rollers flitting through the air in the sunshine is such a wonderful way to spend your day, before retiring to an intimate safari camp for the evening. 

Dine under little lamps in the acacia trees, watch fireflies dance under the moonlight and listen to the sounds of the savannah as you indulge in a cold glass of beer. Finish your trip with a few days relaxing in Zanzibar, where you can sink your toes into white-sand beaches, feast on fresh seafood and relax by the pool in a luxurious hotel. It's the perfect end 

Romantic hotel recommendation: Manta Resort on Pemba Island, just off the north coast of Zanzibar, is an idyllic spot to relax after a safari. Spend time together snorkellng in the turquoise water and dining on the beach before soaking up a spectacular sunset over the Indian Ocean.

3. Patagonia 

The vast wilderness of Patagonia is a famously romantic landscape, perfect for scenic hikes with your other half, followed by intimate dinners and stargazing under inky skies. Southern Patagonia is where mountains and plains collide; you can ride horses across the grasslands, hike along the bright blue ice of the Perito Moreno Glacier and admire the rugged peaks of Los Cuernos in Torres del Paine National Park. Every step you take here is tinged with the romantic history of escaping civilisation to reach the far corners of the planet. 

The Lake District is equally beautiful, with endless hikes, chocolate-box villages and unique forests to explore, whether you’re staying in Bariloche in Argentina or over on the Chilean side near Puerto Montt. You can easily spend two weeks just exploring Patagonia but a trip here pairs perfectly with a stop in Buenos Aires to enjoy a delicious steak dinner or a visit to Mendoza for some wine-tasting under the mountains. 

Romantic hotel recommendation: Sleep under the stars at EcoCamp Patagonia, a Chilean glamping retreat with views of the towers in Torres del Paine. Tuck yourself into a cosy eco dome with a wood-burner in the corner each night, spending your days looking for pumas and hiking through the wilderness.

4. French Polynesia

Island hopping through French Polynesia is such a wonderful way to see the South Pacific. These romantic islands are just idyllic with lush, green islands and vast, sandy atolls just waiting to be explored. The Society Islands are the most popular; hike the lush hills of Moorea, snorkel with colourful fish in Huahine, taste the local delicacy poisson cru in Raiatea and admire the picture postcard views in Bora Bora. 

If getting off-grid aligns more with your idea of romance, then why not head to the Ahe or Rangiroa in the Tuamotu Islands, where you can explore the coral atolls with incredible diving and quiet local life. To discover a unique culture, language and dancing, you can visit the Marquesas, where black, volcanic beaches and rugged green mountains await. Or for a real castaway vibe, the Austral Islands beckon, where you can watch whales the shores of Rurutu or hike amongst the orange trees in Tubuai. French Polynesia is such a wonderful place to discover together.

Whether you’re looking for perfect beaches, delicious food or luxurious hotel stays, Fiji can deliver on every level. Exploring the wide beaches of the Yasawas, an island chain near the mainland, where you can swim with manta rays and snorkel in the famous Blue Lagoon, or head to the Mamanuca Islands, where you can kick back and relax in some truly beautiful properties. 

For something super romantic we’d always recommend a visit to the beautiful island of Taveuni. This authentic island is known as the garden of Fiji, with a unique and lush environment just waiting to be explored. Taveuni is home to spectacular rainforests, perfect if you love hiking and exploring. Head out and discover the famous Bouma National Park where Tavoro Waterfalls can be found. Jump into the perfect water and swim in the natural pools – the perfect end to the end of a scenic hike.

Rise at dawn to watch the sun emerge over the calm ocean, as fruit bats chatter overhead coming home to roost. 6. Maldives

It's easy to spend a few weeks in South Australia, combining different landscapes of outback bush, pristine coastlines, twinkling city and rural idylls in just one spectacular state. Look for koalas and sip local gin on Kangaroo Island before settling in for ocean views at a luxurious beach front lodge. Fly to the Eyre Peninsula where you can dine on garlicky seafood and swim with sealions in perfect azure water. 

Hike through the outback and watch wallabies hop through the bush in the Flinders Ranges before heading down to devour world-class cuisine in quaint Adelaide. Tour the vineyards of the MacLaren Vale and the Barossa Valey, where you can taste local reds and learn about some of the oldest vines in Australia.
