What to do after university: 5 reasons to travel after graduation

Summer is here! You’ve packed your bags, thrown up your mortarboard and said good bye to your home of three years. What next? The age old question has been troubling graduates for years so if you’re still not sure, here are our 5 reasons to take a break and go travelling after university...

1. You deserve a break!

You’ve just finished studying for three solid years and if you’re like me, finals will have nearly killed you. You deserve a break – why not head to Thailand and relax on the beautiful beaches of Koh Lipe and Koh Lanta or swim amongst the serene whale sharks in Belize? If you’d rather blow off steam and release the energy you’ve built up over weeks sitting in the library then why not go bungee jumping in Queenstown, New Zealand, or zip lining through the jungle canopy of Costa Rica? Celebrate your degree in style!

2. Improve your CV

Travel is a great way to improve your CV

Travel is a great way to improve your CV as well as exploring the working opportunities that the world has to offer. Finishing university is no guarantee of knowing what you want for the future so take a trip to figure out what you want to do. “Finding yourself” sounds very cliché but try teaching English in China or conservation work in Kenya and you might just figure out what you want to do in life. One friend of mine had a degree in History but headed to Australia for a year to pick grapes - now he’s studying agriculture and owns his own small vineyard! You never know what opportunities might arise. If you're under 31, working in Australia could be for you.

3. Real independence

Travel forces a real independence out of you

Travel forces a real independence out of you, a different realisation to the one in the first week of university when you realise there’s no mum around to wash your socks. Where are you headed? When are you going? How are you going to get there? Managing every step of your journey will put you right in at the deep end of thinking for yourself but seize the challenge and you’ll come out the other end with a whole new perspective on independent living.

4. Discover the world

Unless you’re very lucky, as a new graduate in your early twenties you won’t have seen much of the world. Take the initiative and explore the world, from the bustling streets of India to the colourful landscapes of the USA. Try a steak in Argentina, spot wildlife in Tanzania, beach hop your way through Australia, cuddle a panda in China or hike through the stunning landscape of New Zealand – the options are endless and what better way to start the rest of your life than by ticking off a few of these exciting places and a multi-stop ticket can take you anywhere.

5. There’s no better time to go

You’ve finished university. You’ve got no job, no commitments – now is the perfect time to embark on a round the world trip. If you’re up for a long one why not head to Vietnam to teach English, saving up some money before exploring Australia, from the shell beaches of Western Australia to the cool cities of the East coast. Stopover in the Cook Islands and Hollywood before learning Spanish in Peru and traversing South America to finish at the parties of Rio de Janeiro.

If you’re lucky enough to have bagged yourself a job come September there’s still plenty of time to explore over the summer. Spend two months discovering the beauty of Indonesia, or 4 weeks road tripping across the USA (like me!). We can help you plan a great 3-month or 6-month itinerary that can take you around the world with a taste of several cultures – from sleek Asian cities to paradise islands and serene beaches. No matter what your time frame, a fantastic travel experience is always waiting to be had.

Not sure what to do after university?

If you're ready to set out on a trip, we can help you pick the coolest possible round the world flights and advise you on working abroad, car hire, campervans and group tours to places you want to see but don't know how to reach. Most of our team have done similar round the world trips, so we'd be more than happy to help plan yours. Call us today on 1273 320 580 or make an enquiry by email to start the planning!
