Delhi is such an interesting place – a real collision of chaos and calm in a city of 33 million people. I had no idea what to expect when I travelled to Delhi for the first time earlier this year but as soon as I got there, I was hooked.
It reminded me a lot of the hustle and bustle of other Asian cities I know well, like Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City, but with an energy that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
There is so much to do in Delhi, from tasting some of the cities best cuisine to exploring it’s landmarks and cultural hotspots. In such a busy place, it’s good to have a relaxing hotel to retreat to, to spend a few hours enjoying the famous Indian hospitality. Here are my favourites, whether you’re looking for something traditional, modern or colonial style.
The Imperial Delhi is an iconic hotel in the city, a testament to the bygone British era, with a classic charm throughout the hotel that is just enchanting. A combination of art deco style with exquisite Victorian architecture and meticulous gardens, this hotel transports guests to a world of regal luxury. The impeccable service and attention to detail ensure a stay that is both memorable and unmatched in grandeur.
A real highlight of a stay here is the dining - you can indulge in a variety of gourmet dining experiences, including the award-winning Spice Route restaurant. The food I ate here was just sensational, some of the best in India. You can also escape the city with an afternoon unwinding at the Imperial Spa, which offers a serene escape with traditional Ayurvedic treatments. With its central location and historical significance, The Imperial Delhi is more than just a hotel—it's a landmark that epitomizes Indian opulence.
Tucked away amongst the twisting alleys of Old Delhi, Haveli Dharampura is a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into India's rich heritage. This meticulously restored 19th-century mansion captures the essence of Mughal architecture and hospitality. The Haveli's traditional courtyards, jharokhas, and intricate carvings create an ambiance that is both historical and luxurious, perfect for your first stop in India.
The Haveli also prides itself on offering authentic cultural experiences such as live classical music, Kathak dance performances and kite flying from the rooftop - an iconic Delhi experience. For the foodies, the in-house restaurant serves up traditional dishes that perfectly reflect your time in Old Delhi. Staying at Haveli Dharampura is like stepping back in time and experiencing the India of old.
Golden Haveli, a sister property to the Haveli Dharampura, is a boutique hotel that offers guests a taste of traditional Indian hospitality with a touch of modern amenities. The hotel's design reflects the grandeur of India's palatial estates, with intricate artwork and elegant furnishings. Each room shows off local craftsmanship, with attention paid to every detail to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
What sets the Golden Haveli apart is its dedication to personalized service, ensuring that each guest's stay is tailored to their preferences. Whether it's arranging a guided tour of the city's historic landmarks or a quiet evening in the lush gardens, the staff at Golden Haveli goes above and beyond to make your stay special. The colours and textures of the design are so magical, it really does feel like you've truly arrived in India.
Roseate New Delhi is a contemporary oasis of calm in the bustling city. Its modern design, with flowing water and serene green spaces, create a tranquil atmosphere that feels like a sigh of relief after a day explore the bustling city. If a relaxing city stay is what you're after, then you've found your spot. Chill by the infinity pool and indulge in a massage at the world-class spa that promises rejuvenation.
The dining options at Roseate New Delhi are a wonderful, with chefs crafting innovative fusion dishes combining local flavours with world-class techniques. My dinner of chooza khaas makhani and makhani dal with a flaky paratha was utterly delicious. The rooms and suites are luxurious and modern, with smart technology and plush interiors, including an enormous bath that's just waiting to be enjoyed.
An iconic of elegant service in Delhi, Claridges has been impressing it's guests since it opened in the 1950s. You'll find old-world charm combined with contemporary amenities, ensuring that every stay here is comfortable and memorable. The hotel's heritage is refected in it's traditional but stylish decor with staff that make looking after you their top priority.
With a selection of delicious dining options, Claridges can offer something to please everyone, from authentic Indian dishes to tasty European fare. The hotel sits in the heart of the diplomatic quarter, where wide roads are lined with lawns and flowerbeds, alongisde the rows of embassies. This tranquil area is a great place to be based, especially when looking for a quiet retreat from the buzzing city.
Fans of the Oberoi brand will find everything they'd expect at this luxurious city hotel. Although the concrete exterior is not particularly inspiring, once you step through the doors, you enter a world of sophistication and style, with spectacular floor-to-ceiling views over Humayun’s Tomb on one side and the Delhi Golf course from the other. The rooms are stylish and recently renovated, with elegant furnishings and all the mod cons you'd expect.
The dining here is unparalleled - you can enjoy Michelin standard Chinese food, modern Indian cuisine, exquisite patisserie or just grab a drink on the rooftop bar and soak up the views towards the city skyline. It also combines perfectly with other Oberoi properties in India, including in Agra, Shimla and Jaipur, where the hotels are of different styles but retain the same famous hospitality.
